Chinese lab Moonshot is preparing Kimi 3 — reportedly China's largest open model at 2-3 trillion parameters — as a direct competitor to Anthropic's flagship.
Moonshot, the Chinese AI lab behind the Kimi model family, is preparing a Kimi 3 release aimed squarely at Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8. Sources describe Kimi 3 as the largest open model from China to date, in the 2-3 trillion parameter range and available with released weights.
If the reported parameter count holds and the release includes open weights, Kimi 3 would be the first Chinese frontier-scale model competing directly with Anthropic's top tier on the open-weight axis. That combination has been Anthropic's most defensible position — closed weights, top-tier capability — and Kimi 3 is aimed at exactly that.
Chinese labs have consistently outmaneuvered US closed-model incumbents by treating open weights as a distribution strategy. Kimi 3 is the natural next step: match capability, then flip the distribution model. Anthropic will feel this on enterprise deals that were previously non-competitive.
No official launch window, but the industry chatter suggests Q3 2026. Watch for capability disclosure benchmarks in early August.
